1962 South African lawyer and civil rights
leader Nelson Mandela receives life imprisonment
for
an act of treason against the South African
government. Despite police harassment.
his wife,
Winnie Mandela, continues to speak out
against apartheid and to fight for Nelson's
release
and the freedom of her people.
1963
A Birmingham church is bombed. killing
four black children.
Two hundred and fifty thousand people demonstrate
at the historic March on Washington in
support of the passage of the Civil Rights
Act, which outlaws segregation and ensures
voter rights and protection. At the march,
Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his famous "I
Have
a Dream" speech.
Civil rights leader Medgar Evers is assassinated.
1964
The Civil Rights Act passes. Constance
Baker Motley Is elected to the New York
State Senate, the first black woman to
sit in the senate in that state's history.
Martin Luther King, Jr. is awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize.
1965
Because of the enthusiasm and activism
on the part of many African Americans—like
Fannie Lou Hamer, a sharecropper who simply
wanted to vote—-the Voting Rights
Act of
1965 is passed. It provides for federal
examination of voter registration procedures
and gives
the U.S. Attorney General the authority
to sue a principality on behalf of persons
deprived
of their right to vote.
Human rights leader Malcolm X is assassinated.
1967
Aretha Franklin's song "Respect" Is
released and becomes a phenomenal success.
Rhythm and blues ("soul music")
finally becomes acceptable and popular
with whites
and blacks alike. Up until the late 1950s,
black music was not allowed to be played
on white
radio stations.
1968 Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated.
Coretta Scott King continues to spread
his
message.
Shirley Chisholm is elected the first African-American
congresswoman.
1972
Shirley Chisholm becomes the first African-American
woman to make a bid for the nomination
for the presidency of the United States.
1973
Clara McBride Hale founds Hale House to
care for drug-addicted babies. She is later
named an "American Hero" by President
Ronald Reagan in 1985.
In Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court
rules that states may not ban abortions
and that
the 14th amendment protects a woman from
state Intrusion into her decision as to
whether
or not to bear a child.
1974
Cicely Tyson is nominated for an Academy
Award for her role in Sounder. Later she
wins an Emmy Award for her performance
'as Jane Pittman in "The Autobiography
of Miss Jane
Pittman."
1983
Alice Walker wins a Pulitzer Prize for
her novel. The Color Purple.
1986
Dorothy Height of the National Council
of Negro Women founds the annual Black
Family Reunion Celebration.
1988 Jesse Jackson runs for the Democratic
nomination for president of the United
States.
Tom Morrison wins a Pulitzer Prize for
her novel. Beloved.
1990
Under pressure by the world's leaders.
South Africa begins dismantling some of
its apartheid practices.
Nelson Mandela is released from prison
In South Africa.
Miriam Makeba returns home to South Africa
after years of exile.
